Sumner township and the village of Sumner was named for a prominent United States Senator from Massachusetts, Mr. Charles Sumner, who was born in Boston in 1811. In his early life, Mr. Sumner maintained unusual literary activity, writing chiefly upon legal topics. In 1840, he began to take an active part in the anti-slavery movement, and in 1845 he delivered an oration at Boston on the "True Grandeur of Nations," which became famous. In 1851, through a combination of Free Soilers and Democrats, he was elected to the United States Senate, of which he was member until his death in 1874. Important Phone Numbers
