       WHAT IS A STREETSCAPE?

(Second in a series of articles explaining UPTS' Strategic Plan)

A "streetscape" design is similar to a landscape design except it involves a city street where business' are located with sidewalks, decorate lampposts, benches and plantings. Downtown sidewalks and street lamps are high on the list of projects Uptown Sumner will begin to implement in the next 1-3 years. This part of the strategic plan is called:  Infrastructure/Design. Chairs for this committee are Barb Grabill and soon to be named co-chair. One of the first action steps in the plan is to develop and implement a directional signage program to create an identity for the downtown. This will be done by researching similar towns signage, plus costs and regulations. Currently UPTS is working with the Aquatic Center Board on new signs to direct people to the pool. The Sumner Rotarians have also contacted the UPTS Board to work on the signs on each end of Sumner to welcome people to the city.

The second objective in the infrastructure/design plan is to develop and implement a streetscape plan for downtown Sumner. Action steps include identifying potential consultants for the downtown, meeting with designers and presenting the plan to the community. Presently McClure engineering from Ft. Dodge has compiled a preliminary estimate on sidewalk and street lamp replacement for the downtown. Gardner Architecture from Strawberry Point will also include in his drawing ideas for sidewalks and street lamps. UPTS will also research funding options and gather input from City Council members, community leaders and business owners. The project is on the time line to start the summer of 2003.
